Antibes, Part Two - Visiting Juan-les-Pins

Antibes, Part Two – Visiting Juan-les-Pins

In part one, I looked at some of the film locations in Antibes, the picturesque town situated between Nice and Cannes.

Juan-les-Pins is a small town just a few miles from the centre of Antibes, famous for almost a century as a playground for the rich and famous from around the globe.

One of the town’s most famous landmarks is the L’Hôtel Belles Rives. Once home to F. Scott Fitzgerald when it was known as the Villa Saint-Louis, the hotel opened for business in 1929 and soon became the place for celebrities and musicians to stay for the summer.

The hotel has featured in numerous films and TV shows over the years, including 2012’s Pauline Detective.

The rear of the hotel was also used in the title sequence of 1970s TV series, The Persuaders!, starring Roger Moore and Tony Curtis.

The Belle Rives housed guests such as Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis, who attended the annual Jazz à Juan festival, which takes place from 12 to 21 July in 2013. Davis infamously parked his pink Cadillac outside the hotel so he could be driven to the jazz festival along the road.

Another well known Juan-les-Pins landmark in the Villa Eilenroc, built in 1867 and now open to the public. The villa is used for public events and has also been used as a location in many films, including 2010’s Killers, 2011’s Monte Carlo, 2012’s Another Woman’s Life.

The villa’s gardens are today open to the public , with some stunning views out to sea.

Nearby is the famous Hôtel du Cap Eden Roc, which has welcomed film stars through its doors for decades. It’s particularly popular during the Cannes Film Festival, with guests such as George Clooney, Robert Redford and Steven Spielberg known to have visited. Looking further back, movie legends such as Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Gary Cooper and studio head, Jack Warner, resided at the Eden Roc.

Watch a short video of my tour.

Next week I’ll be looking at the town of Grasse.
